If there is one thing I have tried to keep firmly away from my current work on The Labour Party, Spin and the 1997 and 1966 party machines it’s the relationship between Harold Wilson and his Personal and Political Secretary Marcia Williams (later Lady Falkender). It has proved to be an impossible goal as we can see here.
Labour leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn has been accused by award-winning historian, Anne Applebaum of being a ‘useful idiot’ and swallowing the information (or mis or disinformation) put into play by the heavily Kremlin influenced Russia Today broadcaster. I’m currently working on a dissertation about British Politics and that nebulous ‘Dark Art’ called ‘Spin’. One element of this includes the use of focus groups and polling to inject facts into the process of campaigning and then into the communication of government policy to the electorate.
